What to do when it snows…teach your kids to use your camera
This is going to be a great weekend for pictures… and you don’t just have to take pictures of your kids in the snow…you may also have plenty of time to teach them the basics of you using a camera. You can read how below. You will also find info on upcoming classes and fundraisers.
Photo Tips: Teaching your children to use a camera — a great snowed-in activity
Lately I’ve been teaching my 4-year-old daughter and her best friend to use my camera, yes my big pro camera. I highly recommend doing this, working with your child to learn to use your camera as an endeavor of exploring art.
The biggest tip I can give you is to put your camera on a tripod and keep it at their level.
* Show them how to compose the photo using the zoom or moving the camera or the subject
* Focus by pressing the shutter half way down.
* Take the photo
* And be sure to tell them to never, ever touch the lens.
Why would you want to teach your child to use a DSLR or a point-and-shoot this way? Well, the short answer is the photos come out better (check out what the girls did). The longer answer is that for one the tripod gives them time to compose, and slowing down the process makes photography a really different activity. Furthermore, using the best tools in the house can be empowering to kids.
I would love to see the photos they take, please share them with me!
Photo Classes are back!
I will be teaching photo classes again this winter and spring. Photo of me by Z My first class will be on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. near Wolf Trap in Vienna. Join us as we go over the basics of using a camera, getting good photos in different lighting situations, stopping motion, and separating your subject from your background. If you just got a new camera for the holidays or use yours on program all the time, this class is for you. This class will include instruction, practice time, and review of work. The cost is $45.
I will be teaching a short 4-week class on editing your images with Photoshop; please let me know if you are interested. You must have access to Photoshop. My plan is to hold two-hour classes over the course of four Saturday mornings in February and March. The cost will be $95.
Please email me if you are interested in either or both classes jessica@portraitplaytime.com.
Stay tuned, more classes to come!

Fundraising: The Double Whammy
Help two great organizations with one photo session.
Celebrate Valentine’s Day one day early by doing a photo session that will capture the love in your family. We are fundraising once again for the kids at Arlington Academy of Hope and then we can submit one photo to the family photo contest I announced last month. Click here for more details about the AAH fundraiser and here for more info about the photo contest.
We also have two other dates for Family Photo Sessions. Maple Avenue Market, the great new market in Vienna, will be hosting two nights of photo sessions, Tuesday February x and Tuesday March x. Each night we will have six sessions from 6 – 9 p.m. Email me to sign up.
Hope to see you soon either behind your camera or in front of mine.

Testimonials
Jessica knew how to engage the boys so that the photo session was very easy. The pictures are beautiful and we will treasure them forever.
— Kristin H.Jessica and through her, Portrait Playtime made some beautiful portraits of our family. We were especially happy with Jessica's ability to get everyone to relax and "act" natural. My in-laws are in their 90s and it is not easy to get them to loosen up, but Jessica did, and the pictures are a tribute to her abilities as a photographer. Thanks Portrait Playtime!
— Nancy S.Thank you!! So excited...we just had our La Leche League meeting on Tuesday and the pictures were an absolute hit. Everyone was in awe of the beauty you captured.
— Rene K.Jessica and Rebekah wen’t above and beyond based upon our families unique situation; my husband is leaving next week for a 6 month deployment. Because of the special bond between these ladies and our family they expedited the photo process so that my husband will be able to see them before he leaves. On the surface this may appear to be more than a kind gesture, but for me, this has allowed my family to enjoy the beautiful photos together. The professionalism, humor and care that we experienced with Jessica and Rebecka will be something that we will take with us for the rest of our lives. These ladies have truly given my family a reason to smile at such a difficult time in our lives. Thanks so much Playtime Portraits!
— Paris T.Ooooo, I LOVE THEM!!!! Thanks so much Jessica, these are just perfect. This might sound silly, but I really feel like you captured "who I am" ... as in, they match the way I view myself and my personality.
— Stephanie Oppenheimer APROur session with Portrait Playtime was so much fun that I almost forgot we were there to take pictures. Jessica really captured my children’s personalities and our family dynamic in the images. I am very happy with our pictures and I know we will enjoy them for years to come.
— Maggie T.Working with Portrait Playtime was the perfect fundraiser for our La Leche Leauge group! We hosted the locations for the photo shoots, spread the word to fill up the schedule, and they did everything else. Not only did we raise money for our group, but everyone who participated was delighted with the photos that were taken. The portrait of my family captures each personality perfectly.
— Jenn GriffithDoing a fundraiser with Jessica was easy, and enjoyable. I loved watching her interact with babies, children and adults to create great portraits.
— Marianne V.Working with Jessica on my headshots was a delight -- she was diligent, creative, enthusiastic and playful, and the whole process was fun. The photos were great and my publisher is thrilled!
— Benjamin R.My daughter's picture softens the room and everyone who can't help but to stare at it.
— Lizette A.Your photographs are brilliant. Looking at them, you immediately know that our campers are interested, active, challenged and engaged. If you look at the pictures on any other camp web site, you see only posed pictures of smiling campers with their arms around each others' shoulders.
— Shane MishkinMy children are far apart in age—our son is 17 and our daughter is 9—and I worried it would not be possible to get intimate, loving photos of them together. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Jessica engaged my children with each other and with her. The photos exceeded my expectations. Visitors to our home almost always ask who the photographer was.
— Marianne V.Simply awesome. Thanks for a job well done.
— Wilfred C.What I love about my photos is that Jessica completely captured the essence of my two children at different stages and ages. Their quirks, their expressions and their personalities. When I look at our family photos I feel like I've entered a little time capsule where I can experience memories that I may have otherwise have forgotten. Thank you Jessica, what a treasure!
— Michelle W.Jessica captured the spirit and personality of each of my 3 boys, she was patient calm and sweet and the photographs are treasures for our family
— Alisa H.Working with Jessica was 100% enjoyable—from the photo shoot to the final product. The magnificent shoots captured the true essence of my daughter's personality. I love my pictures!!
