Watching this video, Point, Shoot, and Share DVD with Will Crockett,
makes me want to get up early, grab a camera and go shoot the details in my neighborhood. Will Crockett uses every day language to demystify photography terms so that everyone can understand it, young and old alike.
It is a great introduction and overview to using any digital camera, whether you are shooting a point and shoot or a DSLR, including post production and printing. It explains the basics of how to set up your camera and keep changing those basic settings to get a the photo you want. It both shows and tells you had to take a photograph, the walk through the streets of New Orleans really demonstrates how one builds a photograph so you can go out and start taking amazing photos.
Even though this video is for the amateur, I think pros would grow as a photographer by watching this, it really goes into Will Crockett’s way of thinking about photography on a personal personal level, how to grow our photography outside of client time, just to ride our passion.
Here are some photos I took that were inspired by this video
Happy November!
This year’s fall sessions have been so much fun and we can’t wait to do more!
We’ve photographed everything from father daughter domino games, to siblings jumping in leaves, to kids playing chess…the perfect kind of photo session. (Read the chess story here!). I love my job, thank you for making it possible!
What could be better than capturing what you want to celebrate about your family this year, while benefiting a great organization. We want to celebrate your family with photographs, and raise more money for Artemis House while doing it.
Here are some ideas for what your session could look like.
- Photos of the entire family when everyone’s in town for Thanksgiving
- Photos for holiday cards (yes, there’s still time!)
- A New Year’s card
- Documenting your family’s favorite holiday event or tradition
- Sitting around a fire roasting marshmallows and drinking cocoa
To meet our goal for Artemis House we’d like to offer additional mini sessions at the day and location of your choosing, with a special sitting fee of $75 ($60 of which will be donated to Artemis House). We still have sessions available this coming weekend as well as Thankgiving and of course throughout December. The number of sessions is limited to ten, so let us know right away that you want your mini session!
Warmly,
Jessica Wallach
This fall the photo sessions have been amazing, the other week we did this session that is just the way I envision a photo session should go.
We were doing the Artemis Fundraiser’s first day and we were about to photograph the host’s kids. Now they have done tons of sessions with me and we have tried lots of different thing and always get amazing photos. This year it was just going to be the kids, and mom and dad were going to make themselves scarce, leaving me with instructions of somethings mom wanted.
However, other things happened…
when it was their turn to do the photo session, the kids were playing chess down stairs and they did not want to leave their game, so I invited them to bring it upstairs and play in front of the camera. They loved the idea. We made a deal with them, they play for 10 minutes and then they do what mom wants for 10 minutes and then they could decide again. Every now and again they would stop playing and hug, the chess photos are really cool, they are so intent on the game, so much expressed in those photos about their relationship, mastery and playing.
After they stopped playing, they were ready to take
direction and try a bunch of stuff the mom wanted and then there would be times they just crack up and fall down in each others arms..what more could I ask for.
Here’s a cool way to think about ISO! ISO functions similarly to our eyes adjusting to different amounts of light. Like when you go inside a movie theater, and at first you can’t see anything but then your eyes adjust and you begin to be able to see things more clearly.
The ISO numbers correspond to different amounts of brightness. Here are some examples.
- ISO 200 , for the brightest light, i.e. outside.
- 400 bright, but not quite as bright.
- 800 for a little dimmer light such as a well-lit room and late afternoon outdoors.
- 1600 is a little dimmer still, dusk .
- 3200 is for a larger depth of field inside or in a darker situation
Now you would just think that you would want to change your ISO for these situations, but sometimes it’s better to use a flash than to go up in ISO, because the higher the ISO the more digital noise you get. Newer and higher quality cameras can go higher with less digital noise than lower quality or older cameras. Some cameras can go well beyond 3200 without getting too noisy.
In 2011 I had the pleasure of photographing at Frying Pan Farm Park again and again. Here are my favorites.
Our holiday cards are custom designed for and with you. Here are some samples of holiday cards we have designed for others.

Don’t lose your precious memories. Replace your memory cards! The constant exchange of data can wear your cards down and files can become corrupted, losing or damaging your photos. It happened to me personally when I was covering an event for the Patch. It was one of those night where everything that could go wrong did. My flash wasn’t working, my memory card door kept popping open, it was incredibly unpredictable low light, and I’m sure there were other things. When I came home and started processing them, I noticed they looked a little odd, or sometimes the file was completely unreadable. Here’s a sample of what one of readable images ended up looking like:
I talked to my mentor and did some research to figured out what was going wrong with the file and how to best prevent it. I wanted to pass what I learned the hard way onto you.
If you take a lot of photos, every day or several times a week, you should buy a new memory card every year. If you use your camera a couple times a month, buy a new card every other year.
If you use your camera infrequently, you can probably get away with only replacing your memory card every 2-3 years.
To help extend the life and quality of your memory cards in between replacements.
-After downloading images to your computer, always reformat the card in your camera. Deleting images from the card and reformatting are different things. Just deleting images from the card can leave behind data.
-Always turn off your camera before removing or loading your card
-Keep your card away from heat, humidity and cold as much as possible
-Never turn off your camera, or load or remove a memory card while the image transfer process is occurring
-Always keep your camera batteries charged. Data and images can be lost, and memory cards can become corrupted if the camera were to die during the image transfer process.
In case you were wondering, the Patch job was saved by the video I took in addition to the photos. You can check that out here.
Testimonials
Working with Jessica on my headshots was a delight -- she was diligent, creative, enthusiastic and playful, and the whole process was fun. The photos were great and my publisher is thrilled!
— Benjamin R.My daughter's picture softens the room and everyone who can't help but to stare at it.
— Lizette A.Doing a fundraiser with Jessica was easy, and enjoyable. I loved watching her interact with babies, children and adults to create great portraits.
— Marianne V.Jessica captured the spirit and personality of each of my 3 boys, she was patient calm and sweet and the photographs are treasures for our family
— Alisa H.Jessica knew how to engage the boys so that the photo session was very easy. The pictures are beautiful and we will treasure them forever.
— Kristin H.My children are far apart in age—our son is 17 and our daughter is 9—and I worried it would not be possible to get intimate, loving photos of them together. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Jessica engaged my children with each other and with her. The photos exceeded my expectations. Visitors to our home almost always ask who the photographer was.
— Marianne V.Working with Portrait Playtime was the perfect fundraiser for our La Leche Leauge group! We hosted the locations for the photo shoots, spread the word to fill up the schedule, and they did everything else. Not only did we raise money for our group, but everyone who participated was delighted with the photos that were taken. The portrait of my family captures each personality perfectly.
— Jenn GriffithSimply awesome. Thanks for a job well done.
— Wilfred C.Our session with Portrait Playtime was so much fun that I almost forgot we were there to take pictures. Jessica really captured my children’s personalities and our family dynamic in the images. I am very happy with our pictures and I know we will enjoy them for years to come.
— Maggie T.What I love about my photos is that Jessica completely captured the essence of my two children at different stages and ages. Their quirks, their expressions and their personalities. When I look at our family photos I feel like I've entered a little time capsule where I can experience memories that I may have otherwise have forgotten. Thank you Jessica, what a treasure!
— Michelle W.Ooooo, I LOVE THEM!!!! Thanks so much Jessica, these are just perfect. This might sound silly, but I really feel like you captured "who I am" ... as in, they match the way I view myself and my personality.
— Stephanie Oppenheimer APRThank you!! So excited...we just had our La Leche League meeting on Tuesday and the pictures were an absolute hit. Everyone was in awe of the beauty you captured.
— Rene K.Jessica and through her, Portrait Playtime made some beautiful portraits of our family. We were especially happy with Jessica's ability to get everyone to relax and "act" natural. My in-laws are in their 90s and it is not easy to get them to loosen up, but Jessica did, and the pictures are a tribute to her abilities as a photographer. Thanks Portrait Playtime!
— Nancy S.Jessica and Rebekah went above and beyond based upon our families unique situation; my husband is leaving next week for a 6 month deployment. Because of the special bond between these ladies and our family they expedited the photo process so that my husband will be able to see them before he leaves. On the surface this may appear to be more than a kind gesture, but for me, this has allowed my family to enjoy the beautiful photos together. The professionalism, humor and care that we experienced with Jessica and Rebecka will be something that we will take with us for the rest of our lives. These ladies have truly given my family a reason to smile at such a difficult time in our lives. Thanks so much Playtime Portraits!
— Paris T.Working with Jessica was 100% enjoyable—from the photo shoot to the final product. The magnificent shoots captured the true essence of my daughter's personality. I love my pictures!!
— Lori B.Your photographs are brilliant. Looking at them, you immediately know that our campers are interested, active, challenged and engaged. If you look at the pictures on any other camp web site, you see only posed pictures of smiling campers with their arms around each others' shoulders.
